Solution to Maternity Indemnity Crisis

The Maternity Coalition today welcomed the Stanhope's Government's commitment to attempt to provide a solution to the lack of indemnity cover for Independent Midwives.

"The Maternity Coalition has, however, provided the Government with the answer some months ago." said spokesperson, Justine Caines.

There have been very few cases of litigation against midwives. It is known that when women are supported by midwives and take responsibility for their own care that they are far less likely to sue if an adverse outcome arises. Midwife-led care has been proven to result in fewer obstetric interventions to achieve safe childbirth; the fewer interventions the lower the risk.

The Maternity Coalition presented a cost effective program to the ACT Department of Health, and the Chief Minister's office. The proposal complements the findings of the ACT Health Department's Maternity Services Planning Committee that recommends a midwife program be established at Calvary Hospital.

"We have worked with Calvary Hospital and have their in-principle support to host the program. A solution is ready, here and waiting" said Ms Caines.

If the Government implements this program they will be addressing many problems:

International best practice in maternity care shows that at least 80% of women can achieve uncomplicated labour and birth when they receive appropriate care.

"Mr Stanhope has offered the ACT to pilot model legislation to address the medical indemnity insurance crisis. It is short-sighted to develop legislation to address an indemnity issue and not commit to provide international best practice in what is being indemnified," said Ms Caines.
